The Rules

Are you eligible to participate?

  1. Composition of Teams
    1. All teams must be organized and directed by the primary contact person, a degree seeking student of Brigham Young University who is a part time (minimum of 6 hours) or a full time student and is enrolled during the both semesters of the competition. Students who have completed their degree program are not eligible to enroll for six (6) hours of credit in order to qualify for the competition, unless they are currently seeking an advanced degree.Note: Students who have enrolled in ýonlineý courses may count only those online hours that relate directly to fulfilling graduation requirements for their degree. Enrollment in courses that are not directly related to the final degree will not be counted toward the minimum enrollment requirements. Students who plan to enter the competition and who are enrolled in online courses prior to the final registration date may submit a petition for admission to the competition to the Director of the BPC Competition. The petition should include the following: Degree that you are seeking, your major, your current status (year in school ý junior, senior, graduate), the name and number of the online course and the degree requirement that the course will fulfill and your progress in the course. Students who enroll in an online course only to qualify for the competition will not be given approval to submit a plan. All petition requests must be submitted no later than one week prior to the BPC plan submission date ý no exceptions.
    2. Teams may include non-students members, but such membership shall not exceed 50% of the total team. Outside members may include: faculty or staff of BYU, students not currently enrolled, students from other universities, other professionals (accountant, attorney, advisor, etc.)
    3. Teams who have competed and finished in the top three in a previous yearýs competition at BYU may not compete with the same plan in a subsequent yearýs competition

  2. Ownership Of The Idea
Someone other than the student(s) may own the idea for the plan, but the business plan must be the original work of the submitting team.

  3. Registration and submission of entry
All teams must submit five (5) hard copies of the business plan by 2:00pm on 20 February, 2006 in 470 TNRB.

  4. Status of idea/company and funding
Plans presented may be from already existing companies (two years old or younger) or new ideas. Any existing company or idea that has already received angel or venture capital financing is ineligible for this competition. Funding from personal sources including "family and friends" funding is allowed for competition applicants.

  5. Existing companies
Existing companies that have booked revenue prior to September 2005 are not eligible to enter any competitions in the Business Plan Competition.

  6. Participation in more than one entry
A team or an individual may submit no more than two (2) business plans. Exceptions will be made for faculty advisors acting primarily in an advisory capacity.

  7. Mentor
It is suggested that all teams utilize an outside professional as a mentor. Teams selected as semi-finalists will be required to have a mentor. If the semi-finalist team has not previously secured a mentor, competition organizers will assist the team in securing an advisor.

  8. Team Size
No restriction will be made on the minimum or maximum numbers of team members although teams of 3-6 have historically performed well.

  9. Non-disclosure Agreements
    1. Participants should be aware that neither administrators of the competition nor judges of the business plans will be required, not should they be asked, to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDA). Brigham Young University, instead, will ask all who view the business plans to abide by the University's Honor Code.
    2. Participants are encouraged to be selective about what they disclose, to label plans and contents with the words "CONFIDENTIAL AND PROPRIETARY" and to seek legal counsel if they have any further questions regarding the legal protection of their ideas.
